nightmare

I wanted to wish the Netsuite nation a happy 4th of July. As everyone rolls into full summer swing, it's always important to remember the nightmare Blue Tent was in just two summers ago. Our company was running three separate and independent software systems. One for sales. One for accounting. One for project management. It was two years ago that we decided to make the march toward an integrated online software system. I am reminded as the second quarter came to an end of the efficiencies Blue Tent has experienced by our move to an integrated system. There are so many choices w

This summer will prove to be either a big move for small/ midsized business or it may go down as the Titanic. It's up to each of us as leaders to make sure that nightmare does not happen to our business. One of the things we are doing at Blue Tent is an in-depth customer segmentation process. In the first 4 months of the year we saw many small to mid sized businesses really starting to spend more and focus more on growth. As of the last 45 days, we have seen things cool down a bit.

This week it hit me as I was having my old lap top melt down (part of the reason I am writing this on a Saturday), what is the best web browser to use when you fire up Netsuite? I had an old Dell laptop and I have replaced it with a cheap E Machine for the office and a fancy Mac laptop for the road. I seem to remember originally I was told to use Internet Explorer (IE), but of late I have really liked the Chrome browser. Does anyone know what Netsuite is telling people to use? As April 15th passes by and we are all pushed to either file extension on our tax commitments or do your final filing, I thought I would share a story about our Vice President of Operations. As many of us know in business the nightmare of consistent systems can spell the end of your efficiency and effectiveness. Many of you know that I am a big user of Netsuite Software and a big fan, but I think the story of our accounting practices rubbing off on our production team is telling.

It seems that 2010 is the year that many small to mid sized businesses are getting serious about getting their ducks in a row with SaaS. No doubt 2009 was a tough year, but it also shows us what business software can do to help optimize and organize your business. We saw business still happen and it did so because people worked more effectively and efficiently. What is the best way to avoid the nightmare of under utilized resources? What is the best way for me to know what segments of my business are operating at full capacity?

As many of you know I have been posting on the progress we have been having with our full transition to the business accounting software from Netsuite. I have outlined the nightmare of not knowing if revenue matched production, if our time inputs matched the bills….all fun things to worry about for a small and growing company. The SaaS model that Netsuite offers is in and of it’s self pretty amazing!

It’s been a pretty busy day here at Blue Tent – building web sites, sending emails……little did I think we would become Netsuite experts! I did just have my bookkeeper, an old school Quick Books power user say….wow….Netusite is really cool. The accounting side of the software is sweet, but as we dig into our workflow and business practices Netsuite is helping us map out and document in a central location all of our workflow. WOW you might say….you run a web business without all of your workflow documented, what nightmares!

This year we decided it was time to stop running our ponzie scheme! I am not talking about a Madoff job, but a real life accidental ponzie scheme. We are a professional services company that delivers web applications and web presence marketing for small to mid-sized business. Typically we build web sites and collect seventy five percent of the project cost upfront. This has always made the month that we recognized that revenue look very good! Go figure. Previously we did not have our project management software attached to our Netsuite billing, so we couldn't recognize revenue based on work completed. We ended up running multiple applications and about 5 offline spreadsheets. It was a perfect nightmare of systems! So what did we do….
